My Mother, Herdis Anderson Parrish

My Mother in 1932

My mother, called "Andy" her entire adult life, was born, Herdis Borgny Anderson, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa in 1914. Her Norwegian name came from Carl Victor Anderson, her father who was born in Norway in 1877. He celebrated his 17th birthday on the ship that brought him to America in 1894. In 1901 he married Clara Victoria Peterson who was born in Kansas of Swedish immigrants. Thus my mother's ancestry is 100% Scandinavian.

My mother died in 1983 before the age of digital photos; however, I have many excellent paper photos to scan for her page.

In 1997, I established a permanent endowment to fund the Anderson Scholarship at the Sioux Central Community School in Sioux Rapids, Iowa to honor her. Since my mother was the salutatorian of the 1932 senior class of Sioux Rapids High School, the scholarship is awarded to the senior with the second highest GPA. Thus the scholarship is self-selected by students.
